William Liddell

William Liddell was born in Adelaide in January 1932. He was indentured as an apprentice motor mechanic in 1948.

In 1949, he enlisted in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF), 'Q' Battery, 13 Field Regiment, South Australia. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1953 he discharged from the CMF and enlisted in the Australian Regular Army as a recruit, entering the 1st Recruit Training Battalion (Kapooka) in February 1953. He continued to serve until retiring in 1987 aged 55.

His total continuous service, 37 years and 4 months. He was promoted Bombardier in 1954, Sergeant in 1955, Warrant Officer Class Two in 1964 and Warrant Officer Class One in 1969 then received a Prescribed Service Officer commission in 1981.

Bill was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queens Birthday Honours List in 1977 for Services to the Australian Army.

During his CMF service Bill was a Gun Sergeant at the age of 19 years, in 1951.

Posted to the School of Artillery, basic gunnery course then promotion subjects for Bombardier
Posted as an Instructor, National Service, 12 National Service Training Battalion, Holsworthy NSW in 1953 and 16 National Service Battalion, South Australia in 1954
Posted to "A" Field Battery in 1955 (Gun Sergeant, A2 Gun)

Posted to 102 Light Battery (Tara Sergeant) in 1958 "B" Troop

Posted to 102 Field Battery (Tara Sergeant) in 1960 "Battery"

He attended the Long Staff Gunner Course in the United Kingdom from 1965 to 1966 (Locating)

Assistant Instructor Gunner (Locating), School of Artillery North Head, Manly NSW from 1966 to 1969

Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM) 16th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment from 1969 to 1972

Master Gunner School of Artillery North Head, Manly NSW from September 1973 to October 1974

Command Sergeant-Major, Training Command from 1974 to 1978

Regimental Sergeant-Major School of Artillery North Head, Manly NSW from January 1979 to December 1980

Prescribed Service Officer Commission to Captain in 1981

Retired from the Regular Army in 1983 and transferred to the Army Reserve and continued to serve with the Officer Training Unit, Ingleburn NSW.

Fully retired from the Army in 1987
