Sydney Herbert (Bert) was initially called up in 1941 and allotted to 2nd Anti-Tank Regiment then at Cowra. As he was to shortly complete his accountancy degree and gained a deferment that was terminated when the Japanese came into war in December 1941. Bert enlisted in the Army at Holsworthy in July 194 serving with 32nd Battery 12th Australian Army Field Regiment, a recently formed Militia unit. Initially based in Sydney the unit became an AIF unit in July 1942 and deployed to Western Australia as part of 2 Corps. Bert attained the rank of Bombardier, discharging in 1944 having been boarded “B1”. Following his discharged Bert resumed his studies and qualified as a CPA – Certified Practising Accountant. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law. |
