Phillip Howard Brown was born in Wollongong on the 7th of June 1946. Phillip originally enlisted in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF) in August 1963 as a Private with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal New South Wales Regiment. He transferred to the Australian Regular Army in January 1964 and changed corps to Artillery. He deployed to South Vietnam on the 14th of September 1965 with 105th Field Battery and remained on with 1st Field Regiment until the 24th of September 1966. Phillip was promoted to Sergeant around 1972 and consequently transferred to the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC). Phillip was later promoted to Warrant Officer Class Two. Phil took discharge on the 1st of February 1984.

Phil and his wife Pam settled in the Wodonga area and brought up three daughters. He had been fighting a liver complaint for some time and it finally caught up with him.
