Born in Sydney in 1950, Ross joined the Australian Regular Army at age 20 and was allocated to the RAA. His first posting was to 4th Field Regiment in Townsville where he was employed as a clerk in the Regimental Headquarters.

Ross was promoted to temporary Bombardier in December 1969 and he deployed to South Vietnam in March 1970 with 4th Field Regiment.

Ross died accidently after a hand grenade in his trousers pocket exploded. He was killed instantly.

Ross left behind a wife and very young son.
