Warrant Officer Class One Ian Kilgour was born in England on 17 March 1961.  In 1963, his family immigrated to Australia where they settled in Adelaide, SA. 

In August 1978, at the age of 17, Warrant Officer Kilgour enlisted in the Army and was allocated to the Royal Australian Artillery. He was initially posted to 107th Field Battery, 4th Field Regiment, Townsville QLD.  He was promoted to Lance Bombardier in November 1981 and to Bombardier in March 1982.  In 1983 he was posted to 102nd Medium Battery, 8/12th Medium Regiment, Sydney NSW and in early 1985 he was promoted to Sergeant. When 102 Battery disbanded he was posted to 103 Mdm Battery as a Detachment Commander.

In late 1988 Sergeant Kilgour was posted to 16th Field Battery, Tasmania as an Operator Command Post Sergeant; this was the first of three postings to an Army Reserve unit.

 

He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class Two in August 1990 and posted as a Sergeant Major Instructor Gunnery (SMIG) on Gunnery Wing at the School of Artillery, Manly NSW.  In 1993 Warrant Officer Kilgour was posted to 7th Field Battery in Perth as the Unit SMIG. This was a two-year posting and in 1995 he was posted back to 4th Field Regiment as the Battery Sergeant Major of 107th Field Battery. He completed the Regimental Sergeant Major’s course in 1996 and in 1997 was posted to his first non-corps posting as a Training Warrant Officer at the Land Warfare Centre, NQ.

The posting to Land Warfare Centre was cut short due to being promoted to Warrant Officer Class One in January l998 and posted as the Regimental Sergeant Major of 7th Field Regiment, Sydney NSW.  In January 2000 he was posted back to and appointed as the RSM 4th Field Regiment.

Warrant Officer Kilgour remained in Townsville after his two year posting as the RSM 4th Field Regiment and in 2002 was posted as the Senior Instructor of the Soldier Promotion Section, Regional Training Centre, NQ.  This was a three year posting and his last in the Regular Army.  In March 2006 Warrant Officer Kilgour transferred from the Regular Army to the Active Reserve and was employed as a Safety Auditor for the Army Safe Advisory Service.  In 2007 Warrant Officer Kilgour was employed, as a reservist, initially backfilling the Senior Instructor of the Soldier Promotion Training Centre,  NQ and then, and for most of the year, backfilling the ARA Regimental Sergeant-Major position at the Regional Training Centre, NQ.  He only completed approximately 18 months part-time service before commencing a two year posting on continuous full time service to HQ 1st Division as one of three newly established Trade Transfer and Retention Warrant Officers.       

In late 2009, Warrant Officer Kilgour successfully applied for a commission and in January 2010 was commissioned to the rank of Captain and appointed as the Senior Instructor of the First Appointment Course, Queensland University Regiment, NQ Company.  In 2011, CAPT Kilgour was posted back to Army Safe Advisory Service as a Safety Auditor.  In early 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Major and employed as a Management System Auditor in the Army Compliance Assurance Agency.

Major Kilgour continues to serve in the Active reserve and in August 2014 will celebrate 36 years of service with the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery.

He has been awarded the Commander 2nd Division Commendation for his services as the Sergeant Major Instructor Gunnery in 7th Field Battery and also the Order of Australia Medal for his services to Land Warfare Centre, 7th Field Regiment and 4th Field Regiment in the 2002 Queens Birthday Honours List.

He is married to Judy, his partner of more than 30 years, and has two children – Benjamin a soldier with the RACT and Breanna.  He enjoys watching most sports, and is a very keen golfer.  He also enjoys restoring Mokes and Minis.  Major Kilgour and Judy are extremely keen travelers who travel extensively throughout Australia in their caravan, and also love to travel overseas.
