REGIMENTAL SERGEANT-MAJORS

OF THE

ROYAL REGIMENT of AUSTRALIAN ARTILLERY

         
Warrant Officer Class One Martin Hamilton Gowling
         
Warrant Officer Class One Gowling enlisted in the Army on 8th  February 1977 and after Recruit Training was allocated to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery and posted to ‘A’ Battery, 8th/12th Medium Regiment as a Gun Number. After six months he was reallocated to 131st Divisional Locating Battery within       8th/12th Medium Regiment as a Surveyor and Sound Ranger.

He was subsequently posted to 1st Field Regiment (1982), 4th Field Regiment (1984) and 131st Divisional Locating Battery (1987) as an Artillery Surveyor. He was promoted to Lance Bombardier (1980), Bombardier (1980) and Sergeant (1984).

In 1987, he was posted back to 131st Divisional Locating Battery as the Divisional Survey Sergeant.  In 1989, he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class Two and posted to the School of Artillery, Locating Wing as an instructor.  He had further postings to the Command and Staff College (1991) as College SM and the School Of Artillery (1994) as Senior SMIG of Locating Wing.

In 1999, he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One and posted to 131st Divisional Locating Battery as the Regimental Sergeant Major. In 2002, he was appointed as the Regimental Master Gunner and posted to the Combined Arms Training Centre and then appointed the Regimental Sergeant Major (2004) of the same unit. He was appointed as the Regimental Sergeant Major, Army Recruit Training Centre (2006).

In 2008, he posted back to the Combined Arms Training Centre as the RAA Trade Manager. In 2010, he decided to commission and was promoted to the rank of Captain for employment as the Combined Arms Training Centre Operations Officer. He was promoted to Major in 2013 and is currently Staff Officer Grade Two, RAA Trade and Training, Combined Arms Training Centre in Puckapunyal.

Major Gowling has seen operational service in East Timor and Afghanistan and has received the following medals and commendations:

DFSM (with 4 clasps)

Aust Active Service Medal (clasp – East Timor and ICAT)

INTERFET Medal

Afghanistan Medal

NATO Non Article 5 (with clasp ISAF)

USA Army Commendation Medal

Return from Active Service Badge

Chief of Army Commendation (Gold)

COMD 1 Div Commendation (Bronze)

COMDT CATC Commendation (Bronze)
