Historical Specifics: |
The Model 1904 gun at Deniliquin was located in the Council depot at the time the information was collected in 2007. Following advice from the Royal Australian Artillery Historical Company the Council has commenced restoration work within the town. Prior to this a set of wheels had been constructed.
The Model 1904 Field Gun was manufactured by Krupp for the Rumanian army in 1904 and hence has the Crest of King Carol I of Rumania on the barrel. When the First World War commenced in 1914, Rumania waited before taking sides and eventually joined on the side of the Allies. German forces then invaded Rumania and overran the country.
This then provided Germany with a direct route to supply its new ally Turkey and included were guns captured from the Rumanians. This gun was captured by the Australian Light Horse in Palestine in 1917/18. It was allotted to Deniliquin as a War Trophy in 1921. It is highly likely this is one of the guns captured Beersheba as seen in the photo from the Australian War Memorial below.
Beersheba The two regiments took thirty eight officers and 700 other rank prisoners, and captured nine field guns, three machine-guns, a large number of transport vehicles, and much other material. |
