JAN VERBRUGGEN, b. 1712-d. 1781 First employed at the gunfoundry at Enkhuisen (North Holland) in 1746. Appointed Master Founder at the foundry at The Hague in 1755 in succession to Jan Crans. Introduced the Maritz boring machine the design for which had been brought from Douai by Ziegler in 1758. In 1761 and the years following he was accused on more than one occasion of bad workmanship. In 1770 accepted the offer of the post of Master Founder at the Brass Foundry at Woolwich vacant on Andrew Schalch's retirement. Came to England accompanied by his son Peter who was appointed joint Master Founder. Introduced the boring machine at Woolwich. Remained in office, in spite of differences with the Board of Ordnance, until his death. His guns cast at Woolwich bear his son's initial as well as his own, e.g., I & P VERBRUGGEN. |
