Historical Specifics: |
The 68 pounder was first brought into British service in the 1840s. They are first recorded in NSW in 1864 when three are shown in Store. By 1869 a total 18 are recorded in Store. 68 Pounders were used at Georges Head, Middle Head, South Head, Bradleys Head, Fort Scratchley (Newcastle), Flagstaff Hill (Wollongong).
This gun is one of three installed in October 1880 and mounted on Garrison wood standing No 21 on slide No 14. They were manned by local citizens in the NSW Volunteer Artillery. They were replaced by one 6 inch disappearing gun in 1891 and moved to Signal Hill. In 1959 the guns were recovered and moved to the Army Reserve and Naval Reserve Cadets Depot and restored before being relocated to Flagstaff Hill by Wollongong Council in 1983. The gun is in urgent need of restoration as corrosion appears to be occurring beneath the paint. |
