Historical Specifics: |
The first record of SBML 4 pounder guns in NSW appears in 1801 when two are shown at Dawes Battery. In 1806 only one is recorded at Parramatta. It is likely these guns were part of the armament of HMS Supply (2). Reference to the guns continue to be made from 1861 when two are shown at Newcastle but in an unserviceable state. This cannon was made during the reign of King George III.
The gun is said to have been provided to the Australian Agriculture Company soon after they established their settlement at Carrington in the late 1820’s. It was for use to as a signal gun but it is fair to assume that it was also provided for protection of the settlement for use by the military detachment assigned to the settlement. |
