This gun is reputed to be one of the guns carried on the flag ship of the First Fleet, HMS Sirius. 10 guns had been specially loaded on the ship for use in the defence of the settlement to be established in New South Wales. Additional guns were to be brought into the Colony following the sinking of the ship at Norfolk Island. Eight guns of this type were placed at West Battery, near the present site of the southern pylon of Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1788. They were also used at Fort Phillip (site of the Sydney Observatory), Garden Island and Newcastle.
Four guns are reported to have been placed at South Head for use as signal guns and this is reported to be one of these guns.
Markings on this gun are difficult to read due to the wear and in some cases the paint obscures them. The crown cipher is that of King George III. A number 6 is inscribed near the crown, the purpose of this number is unknown but similar markings appear on many of the colonial guns in NSW. It is possibly the method of recording the guns position in the defence. Its weight, 16-1-12, appears near the breech of the barrel. |
