No SBML 12 pounder guns were included in the distribution of obsolete SB guns in 1904 but advice from Council states in the book Brighton-le-sands by R.W. Rathbone, it was acquired by Council in the early 1900’s from a decommissioned naval vessel, the Wolverine.  A plague affixed near this gun states:
‘The cannon is a twelve pound British Naval or garrison gun. The barrel was cast in the Reign of King George II between 1727 and 1760 and probably arrived in the Colony during its early formation. The mark on the right hand trunnion suggests that it was cast by Graham and Sons, Scotland. The barrel is marked with its weight, 33 cwt, 3 qrs, 16 lb and bears the Government Acceptance broad arrow and the Kings cipher. The touchpole platform is drilled to accept a flint-lock to discharge the piece.

‘The garrison carriage was made in 1984 by Rockdale Municipal Council to the original specifications supplied from the Tower of London Archives.

‘Research and technical advice by Mr K.W. Luker.’

SBML 12 pounder guns are first recorded in 1801 when eight are positioned at Dawes Battery. In 1806 there were 12 at Dawes Battery and four at Georges Head. The SBML 12 pounder last appears in records in 1864 when two are recorded as unserviceable at Middle Head.
