| Historical Specifics: | Soon after the start of the war, the Germans realized that their standard field artillery piece, the FK 96 n.A. had some serious drawbacks, against the field artillery of their opponents, which often had both a greater range and a greater effect. Development work was soon started on a new Field Gun and in 1916 the Feld-kanone 16 (FK16) was introduced in to the German Army. The FK 16 was considerably heavier than the FK 96 n.A.. This was no problem during the static warfare up to 1918, but when the German Offensive started in March that Year, this became an obvious draw-back. The FK 16 was simply not as mobile as the FK 96 n.A. At the end of the war the German Army had some 3.020 FK 16 in use - which was almost as many as the older FK 96 n.A., of which there were 3.744 in service. This gun was one of a number of guns captured near Warfusee, France, by the 17th Battalion, 1st AIF on 8 August 1918. Parkes Council had requested a trophy gun be allocated to them ‘in recognition of the 700 members of the district who had served in the war, all patriotic efforts and for the considerable amount of money contributed through the War Loans, and they wanted something to remind future generations of the sacrifice. The Agreement to accept the gun was signed by D. Geddes (Council), J. Barr (Community Member), and R. Stewart (ex member Special List AIF 34th Battalion). |
