Historical Specifics: |
Five 12 pounder howitzers of 10 cwt are first recorded in NSW in 1870. In subsequent reports some appear to retain the 10 cwt ratings whilst others are listed as 9 cwt. In the 1901 report of the Military Committee of Inquiry howitzer 106 is listed as one of four howitzers located at Dawes Battery for use as the Saluting battery. They fired a 21 gun salute during celebrations marking the Federation of Australia in 1901.
The trunnions on this gun had been knocked off and there are some signs of other hammer marks which indicate someone had tried to break the barrel up and sell it for scrap. The NPWS transferred the gun to the National Artillery Museum where the trunnions have been restored and a replica field carriage constructed. The carriage is of the type used with this howitzer. Marked on the barrel is the weight 10-0-0, Royal Cypher of Queen Victoria and the Cipher of 1st Marquess of Andlesey, Master General of the Ordnance 1846 -1852. |
