Historical Specifics: |
The M2A2 is a World War 2 vintage US gun. Designed prior to World War II it commenced to role off the production line in 1940 and used extensively throughout the war. In the 1950s Australia agreed with the US, Canada and Britain to standardize the field gun ammunition calibre to 105 mm. This allowed for common logistic support. This decision meant the 25 pounder guns had to be replaced and the M2A2 was accepted for use in the Australian Army. In 1959 the first M2A2 began to arrive and eventually a total 144 were purchased.
The gun is mounted on a split trail carriage and is capable of firing in high angle that is above 45 degrees. The range of the M2A2 is actually 1,200 metres shorter then that achieved by the 25 pounder. The M2A2 was used by the Australian and New Zealand artillery in Vietnam, replacing the L5 Pack howitzer in 1967.
The M2A2 is still used by some Army Reserve units but is presently being phased out of service. |
