The 12 pounder BL guns were used by Victoria (18), Queensland (4) and Tasmania (2). New South Wales ordered six 12 pounders in 1894 but changed the order for the new 15 pounder in 1897. The 15 pounder BL gun is the last in the line of field guns manufactured without a recuperator. They were to be eventually replaced with the 18 pounder field gun. In 1903 there were 24 15-pounder guns in Australia with a further six on order. 18 of the existing 12 pounders were also converted to 15 pounder. Conversion required modifying the chamber, to receive a heavier shell, and sights.
This gun is one of those purchased for the Royal Victorian Volunteer Field Artillery Brigade in 1885. It remained in Victoria after Federation with the Victorian batteries of the Australian Field Artillery (AFA). In 1905 it was converted to a 15 pounder and mounted on a Mark 3 carriage. By 1912 it is shown as being with No 4 Battery AFA in NSW and placed in store in 1912/13. At some time it was used as a saluting gun. By the 1960s it was placed outside the barracks at Holsworthy. |
