The gun on Lord Howe Island is 5 feet in length and 6-0-0 cwt weight. The cannon was landed on Lord Howe Island from the topsail schooner Colleen Dhas on 21st December 1880, and exchanged for supplies from the Islanders.
The cannon was located at Government House for many years, and then moved to Signal Point in the early 1950's. In 1984 it was moved to the LHI museum site and mounted on a replica trolley built by a Policemen from Dubbo about that time
The Colleen Dhas was a wooden top sail schooner, of 103 tons and was built at Macleay River, Sydney 1875 - by David Elliot and was wrecked April 1883 - grounded on Richmond bar.
Thomas Blomefield produced the design for a 6 pounder light gun 5 feet in length and weighing 6 cwt in the 1790s. The light gun was in service in the British army as early as 1797 and became the standard weapon for the Horse Artillery until it gave way for the 9 pounder Armstrong in the 1860’s. |
