Historical Specifics: The gun is part of the Enfield War Memorial that is located in a commanding position on a large stone plinth. The war memorial was constructed by Enfield Municipal Council and unveiled at 3.30pm on Saturday 11th October 1924 by the Hon. Sir Thomas Rainsford Bavin Esq., M.L.A., Attorney General. The monument not only perpetrates “the memory of brave men and women, but also engender a feeling of rejoicing that by the great sacrifice made we are still able to enjoy the freedom that the British Empire gave.” Alderman E. Ford, Mayor of Enfield 11th October 1924.

The ‘History Sheet of Ceded War Trophy’ indicates that the 105mm German Howitzer was presented by the French Government and is registration number 14977. It was allocated to Enfield Municipality by the New South Wales Trophy Committee in 1921 as part of the Metropolis of Sydney allocation of eight Guns, four Trench Mortars and Sixteen Machine Guns

The gun was restored and repainted in 1991 by G.F. Wilsons and Son Pty Ltd at Councils request. Our files indicate that the gun had received a major restoration shortly before 1991 but had signs of rust and the wood had been poorly treated. The war memorial recently underwent restoration in late 2006. The restoration works involved the removal and replacement of damaged stone at the base of the monument to match the existing sandstone, cleaning, re-pointing and sealing the monument, and plaques to returning it to its original glory. The restoration was funded by Strathfield Municipal Council and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs ‘Saluting their Service’ Commemoration Grant scheme, the work was arranged by the Enfield/Croydon Park RSL Sub Branch.
