Historical Specifics:The requirement for a self propelled gun in the Australian Army probably came from experience of the Australian 1st Armoured Division during World War II and developments in the British Royal Artillery. It is similar to the British Sexton SP Gun. They are a combination of the 25 Pounder gun and the M3 General Grant medium tank. It consisted of a 25 pounder Mark 2/1 gun, fitted with muzzle brakeĀ and replacement of the upper portion of the tank with a fighting compartment and storage space for ammunition. The first Yeramba was made in 1949 with a subsequent production run of a further 13 guns being manufactured during 1951-52. They were issued to the 22nd Field Regiment. They were well received by the unit. In 1956 instructions were issued for their disposal. The recent introduction of the Centurion tank and disposal of General Grant tanks is possibly the reason for their early retirement. In 2008 they represent the only self propelled gun issued to the Royal Australian Artillery.
