Friday 5th April 1918

On This Day Friday 5th April 1918 at Dernancourt the Germans struck two Australian and three British Brigades. “The British and Australian Artillery came under an intense German artillery bombardment, but stuck to their task. In the fierce German assault on the forward positions some of the infantry streamed past the guns. Horse teams arrived to withdraw the guns, but the gunners ordered them away. The effort to maintain the fire can be gauged by the award of nine Military Medals to members of 43rd Battery (Australian Field Artillery) alone during this action”.
