Warrant Officer Class One Sydney Ronald Farrow
   
Sydney Farrow was born on 21st March 1938 at Orange, NSW and he enlisted into the Australian Regular Army Supplement (ARAS) on 19th March 1956.

After his recruit training at 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Kapooka, he was allocated to the Royal Australian Artillery and attended his Corps Training at the School of Artillery, North Head, on an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Course with both 40mm Bofor and 3.7 inch guns.

On 26th September he was posted to 1st Field Regiment at Georges Heights in Sydney; however, on the same day he was then posted to 104th Locating Battery, Middle Head, as a Locator Signaller. In 1957 the Unit was redesignated as 101st Field Battery and he then served as a command post Technical Assistant-Royal Artillery (TARA) – Field (now known as an operator command post). In 2015 Syd was made a Life Member of the Returned and Services League.

Qualified as a TARA (Field) Class 1.

Promoted to the rank of Bombardier.

1959

Posted to 101st Field Battery in Malaya.

 

July

1960

Qualified as First Aid Instructor.

Transferred from the Australian Army Regular Army Special Reserve (O) into the Australian Regular Army.

 

October

1961

Posted to 4th Field Regiment, Wacol, QLD.

Qualified as a Regimental Surveyor Class 3.

 

November

1961

Qualified as a Regimental Surveyor Class 2.

 

May

1963

Qualified in all subjects for promotion to Sergeant.

 

July

1963

Promoted to the rank of Sergeant (as a Battery Surveyor).

 

July

1964

Attended the 12/64 Regimental Officers' Gunnery (Field) Course.

 

September

1964

Posted to the School of Artillery, on temporary promotion as a Warrant Officer Class Two, as an Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery (Ack IG).

 

April

1966

Promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer Class Two.

 

August

1968

Posted to 4th Field Regiment as the Battery Sergeant-Major Headquarter Battery.

 

 

1969

Established the first impact area, gun position and observation post at the High Range Training Area, Townsville.

 

April

1969

Attended the Unit Emplaning Officers' Course, RAAF Base Richmond.

 

February

1970

Deployed to South Vietnam as the Battery Sergeant-Major Headquarter Battery, 4th Field Regiment.

 

March

1971

Posted to the School of Artillery as an Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery (Ack IG).

 

December

1971

Posted to the Royal School of Artillery, Larkhill (UK).

 

January

1972

Attended the Royal School of Artillery's No: 8 Gunnery NCO Staff Course (Field).

 

January

1973

Attained the 1st Position in the Gunnery Staff Course's final assessment.

Attached, over the period January - June, to the Royal Artillery's Training Establishment, Germany, as a Regimental Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery (Ack IG).

1973

Posted to the School of Artillery, as an Assistant Instructor-in-Gunnery (Ack IG).

 

August

1974

Awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

 

November

1974

Promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer Class One and posted as the School of Artillery's Master Gunner.

Posted to Headquarters Field Force Command - Artillery, Victoria Barracks, Sydney.

Took discharge from the Australian Regular Army and enlisted into the Army Reserve's 7th Field Regiment RAA, Sydney.
