Commanding Officer 16th Air Defence Regiment

Chris Hunter was born in Brisbane in 1947 the son and grandson of Regular Army officers.   He graduated from the Officer Cadet School, Portsea in June 1966 and was allotted to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery.

Chris served as a junior officer in air defence units at Woodside, SA and Butterworth, Malaysia.   Following service in Vietnam, he completed extensive specialist training in the UK and California.   He was Senior Instructor (Air Defence) at the School of Artillery in 1977-78 and attended the Australian Staff College, Queenscliff in 1979.   In 1985-86 he commanded 16 Air Defence Regiment.

In 1990 Chris was appointed Director of Officer Career Management.   In late 1991, he was appointed Director of Individual Training and Education Policy in Headquarters Australian Defence Force.   For this work he was awarded a Chief of Defence Force commendation.

In October 1994 Chris left the Army to become the Director of the Australian Emergency Management Institute, Mt Macedon.   He retired from the APS in 2002 and undertook some consultancies for Government agencies.  In 2009 he opened a small business restoring furniture.  

Chris has a BA (History) from Deakin University.   His interests include cricket and rugby union.   He has a passion for roses and grows more than 20 varieties of David Austin roses at his home.
