Derived from the French Schneider C17S this gun was manufactured in the USA by Bethlehem Steel Corp. The 2/1st Australian Medium Regiment were issued with 16 of these howitzers in the Middle East in October1941. In May 1942 the Regiment returned to Australia and brought its guns plus two more. The gun at Tarcutta is one of only two still known to exist in Australia. This gun has deteriorated over the years but is now well-kept. It is missing a number of parts including the wheels, traverse and elevation hand-wheels, and shield. It has ‘No 199’ on top of the breech and ‘EU 199’ on the rear of the breech.  On the side of the Breech are the words,

155M.M. Howitzer.
Model of 1918.
SCHNEIDER.
T Beth.Steel.'

J. Stand. Steel.’

The wheels upon which the howitzer had been mounted for many years, and now removed, may not be of the original type used on the howitzer.
