Historical Specifics: A sign on Silo Hill states this gun, one of two, was originally used on Bare Island before being moved to Fort Scratchley. In 1909 both guns were moved to their present location by boat to Booral, via the Karuah River and thence by bullock dray.

It is unlikely they were positioned at bare Island as no record exists indicating guns of this size were ever used there.

The 68 pounder was first brought into British service in the 1840s. They are first recorded in NSW in 1864 when three are shown in Store. By 1869 a total 18 are recorded in Store. 68 Pounders were used at Georges Head, Middle Head, South Head, Bradleys Head, Fort Scratchley (Newcastle), Flagstaff Hill (Wollongong).
