The RML 16 pounder 12 cwt Mark I gun was introduced into service in NSW in 1880 and used by the Field Artillery Brigade which included the Permanent artillery ‘A’ Battery. The guns were then used by the volunteer artillery until replaced in the early 1900s. The Permanent artillery ‘A’ Battery guns were replaced by the RML 9 pounder in 1885 following the units involvement in the Sudan War.
NSW possessed 10 of these guns (South Australia also purchased eight). This gun was uncovered on 10 September 1970 during construction work on Hornsby Community Centre, previously the site of an old Army Drill Hall. The gun and carriage were restored by Sydney Area Workshops and placed as a monument to ‘A’ Field Battery Royal Australian Artillery (the longest continuously serving regular army unit) on the occasion of their Centenary in 1971. The memorial was unveiled by Sir Roden Cutler VC, Governor of New South Wales on 29 July 1972.
All markings are very hard to read due to paint but the following were recovered years ago when the gun was being refurbished. Carriage number is 255 built by the RCD (Royal Carriage Department) in 1877. Weight of barrel 12-0-12. Cypher of Queen Victoria on barrel. |
