Historical Specifics: When the Royal Artillery reverted to muzzle-loading in 1871, the 9 pounder 8 cwt RML, (rifled muzzle-loader) was the gun selected for field artillery use. In 1874, a 9 pounder 6 cwt was introduced for horse artillery, and this gun was later adopted for field artillery use as well. In 1879 a small number of 9 pounder guns of 6 cwt were required for naval service and a small number of land service guns were altered accordingly. The changes consisted of reducing the dispart patch without interfering with the swell at the muzzle to allow the use of a screw foresight. To avoid confusion with the land Service guns the serial numbers of these guns began at 1001.

The carriage on which the gun is fitted is smaller than the land service guns and is easily identified by the smaller wheels.

Specific use of these guns in Australian waters is not known. At some time they found their way to the Legacy Camp at Narrabeen where over time the effects of life in the open became apparent. The wheels collapsed and the guns mounted on concrete blocks. In 1977 the guns were recovered to the School of Artillery where they were restored by volunteers of the Royal Australian Artillery Historical Society. One gun No 1007 is on long term loan to the School of Artillery at Puckapunyal, Victoria.
