Historical Specifics: The 4.2" mortar was introduced in 1942, It can be broken into three loads for transport (barrel, bipod, baseplate), a light wheeled carriage was available allowing the mortar to be moved short distances by the crew or towed behind a light vehicle, use of this carriage allowed the mortar to get in and out of action quickly. Initially the ammunition was a heavy cast round, with a subsequent short range. Improved rounds became available in 1944 which increased the range.

The 4.2 inch mortars saw service with Australian forces during World War II. Most units found them worthwhile as they could be deployed to difficult areas. The 2/1st Australian Field Regiment used them in operations in the Aitape-Wewak area in February 1945. The batteries deployed to Malaya in the 1950/60s held the 4.2s whilst units in Australia were issued them as alternative equipments. The introduction of the L5 Pack howitzer saw the need for the 4.2 in removed and they were mainly placed in store. Their main use in the later years was as a training equipment use with training mortar locating radar operators. The 4.2 inch was withdrawn from service in 1985.
