Six RML 9 pounder gun were given to the Artillery Battery of the NSW Sudan Contingent in 1885 and brought back to NSW where they were used by the Permanent Artillery Battery, which had formed the majority of the Battery sent to Sudan, until about 1898 when they would have been transferred to a Volunteer Battery. They would have been used until replaced by the 16 pounder and 18 pounder guns. Two guns and limbers were presented to the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and these two are the only remaining guns of the original six .

Whilst the limbers have long since gone, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron have maintained the guns in exceptionally good condition, although wooden and leather parts are missing.

A total of 20 similar guns were also purchased by Queensland (12) and Western Australia (8).
