Historical Specifics: In the 1901 report of the Military Committee of Inquiry set up to record the state of Defence in Australia following Federation the 12 Pounder Howitzer No 64 is recorded as being located at the School of Gunnery, Victoria Barracks, Paddington. It is assumed the gun would have been moved to Dawes Battery until the construction of the Harbour bridge began at which time the gun may have been moved to Fort Denison.

Five 12 pounder brass howitzers of 6 cwt weight are first recorded in NSW in 1861. Eventually they were to be placed one at Fort Scratchley (Newcastle), one at Signal Hill (Wollongong), and Victoria Barracks, Paddington.

In 1861 two 12 pounder guns were sent to Lambing Flats to assist restore order during the riots on the gold fields against the number of Chinese miners. As there were only five 12 pounders of this weight in NSW this gun may be one of those used.
