Historical Specifics:

The gun is presumed to be a 4 pounder due to its very poor appearance. Now stabilised, but ravaged by pitting and corrosion. The nominal length measure is 1,628 mm, which is equal to 5’ 4.09". At approximately 6 inches in from the muzzle, the bore is approximately 84 mm diameter. The HMS Bounty was armed with 4 Pounder guns. The designation given above is the most likely given the physical dimensions.

The gun was assigned to HMS Bounty, for its expedition to the Pacific Ocean. Presumably on loaded to the Bounty at Longreach on the Thames River sometime between 9 October and 15 October 1787. Following the Mutiny on the Bounty the ship was run aground on Pitcairn Island 23 January 1790 and burnt shortly thereafter. This piece was raised from the sunken remains by the Pitcairners in 1845. When the descendents of the Bounty Mutineers were re-settled on Norfolk Island in 1855, this piece was brought with them.
